History of Our House

This house has been in or close to the current location for approximately 100 years.  Two rooms in the house are at least that old.  We started working on this house approximately 15 years ago just to make it more comfortable for us to live.  It soon turned into a process that we grew to love.  With not much money but a lot of determination, we wanted to transform a small non-descript house into something we both could be proud of by doing most of the labor and all of the designs ourselves.   While it may not be a mansion to a lot of people, it is us.    Please keep in mind, this was our first and only attempt to actually construct and reconstruct something like this without any prior knowledge of the building trades.

With the knowledge of the former family who were owners of the land and this old house, we were able to capture some of the history to place here.

This house had been a temant house on the "Faircloth Place" which was approximately 1/2 mile behind (south) of the present location.  The Faircloth Place was later torn down by Tollie Warren, our nearest neighbor in front of our house.  In 1962, Tollie Warren added two bedrooms to the original two rooms, (living room and kitchen) using the wood from the master Faircloth Place house that was torn dow.  One bedroom was locataed off the living room and the other added off the kitchen.
In 1981, Joe Johnson added a laundry room which increased the square footage to approximately 1500 feet.

The house had been a rental home for several years and was not taken very good care of.  I have been told that chickens actually were allowed to run freely in and out of the house.  Motorcycles were actually overhauled on the living room's original hardwood floors.

The house was purchased by Pauline Cooke, mother of Sarah White.  Sarah lived in the house with her family for several years before she married Charles White.  Tollie Warren and his wife lived just below the house on Hickory Ridge Road.  The Warren family were close friends with Sarah and told her the history of the house.  Because of the location, age of the house, Mr. Warrens connection to it and the possibilities with the house and property, it was a natural to remodel again to accomadate our blended family with the possibility, at the time planning, that Charles's mother Mae, and/or Polly (Pauline Cooke) moving there to live with the family due to her health.  Unfortunately, Charles's mother died during the early planning stages and Polly and Mr. Warren died just after the majority of work on the house was complete

CHRONOLOGY SINCE OWNED BY CHARLES AND SARAH WHITE

In 1989, Charles and Sarah White began renovation when Sarah's daughter fell with the side porch.  Their first project was to replace the side porch with a larger deck while at the same time raising and leveling the hall and removing a portitioned wall in the master bedroom.  The back hall was extended to the side door to the deck.  In 1995, Charles and Sarah tore out the old walk-in front porch and poured a new porch and concrete walk and added railing from the porch to the walk.

In 1999/2000, Charles and Sarah began more serious rennovations by adding 804 swuare feet, which added two bedrooms, additional bath and a family room.  The existing largest bedroom was converted into a dining room and the existing smaller bedroom was divided to create a walkway into the family room and to add a walk-in closet for the master bedroom.  The front porch was extended to the full length of the original house.

While this helped the livability of the home, parts of the house still need attention.  So, in 2000, Charles and Sarah decided to "raise the roof."  The back half of the house that included the hall, laundry room, bath and master bedroom had 7 foot ceilings under a shed room.  The 7 foot height was raised to 9 feet.  By raising this area two feet, the roof line changed when keeping the same pitch as the front of the house, suddenly there was approximately 705 square feet of attic space with an 8 foot ceiling.   During the "roof raising," the laundry room was reduced in size as well as narrowing the back hall.  The bath was made larger and only accessible from the master bedroom.  The laundry room was made "dog friendly" by adding a watering and feeding station into an area under a stairway added to access the new 705 foot attic area.  Since the  attic area was always cold in the winter and hot in summer without a way to close it off from the howse below, Charles and Sarah decided to clean out the attic and convert it to another room.  A floor was added as well as electricity and drywall.  Carpet was added to the area as well as the stairs leading to  the area.  The area quickly became the "sports den" in the house with the addition of a projector for wall viewing of sports events and a sports drink dispenser.  Two dormers were added to the roof to allow natural light into the room as well as add to the looks of the front of the outside.

After this was complete, an outside palivion was added in addition of approximately 1800 spuare feet of back and side decks and whole yard landscaping.
